Capella University was founded in 1993 by
Steve Shank when online education was still in its infancy and the Internet
itself was hardly more than a network of government researchers and "tech"
adventurers. But Steve and his partners saw the Internet as the ideal
medium for delivering education to busy adults. Though not first to market
with the idea, Capella University is largely responsible for creating the online
education category. Capella simultaneously developed technologies, converted
skeptical educators and regulators and built a reputation for credibility among
learners and their employers. In 1997, Capella received accreditation from the
North Central Association. Currently the fastest-growing online university,
Capella expands its enrolled learner base at a rate that's four times as fast as
the rate for all learners entering online education.
Steve has served as Chairman and
CEO of Tonka Corporation from 1979 until 1991. During that period, Tonka grew
from $100 million to $800 million in sales. He holds the MA from the
Fletcher School, a joint program of Tufts and Harvard Universities, and the JD
from Harvard Law School. He has also completed the University of Minnesota
Executive Education Program.
